“What in the fuck are you doing here?” Sara asks as Aria begins leading her through the early strains of the song. They’re stepping around much more than Aloysius did already, walking backwards—but somehow, she finds it easy to follow them.

“What do you think I’m doing, Sara?” Aria responds, voice low.

“Stalking me?” Sara suggests. “This is getting really weird.”

Aria shakes their head, holding her waist just a little tighter, moving her—now releasing her, holding their hand up so that she finds herself spinning under it, than catching her again. That’s not an answer to her question. Maybe they are stalking her—

“I have been called morally questionable once or twice before,” they say on the next beat. “But even I draw the line at stalking. Come, I have already told you of my most subversive goal.”

More subversive than whatever efforts you’re taking to keep this dance going while we talk? Sara’s eyes flicker in confusion—and then it hits her.

“To learn from the other factions,” she whispers.

Aria just smiles with the slightest of nods, then leads her in a tight turn, walking her forward several quick paces then back another few.

“But how did you get your petals—” Sara starts.

Aria pulls her in, holding her close enough to whisper in her ear. “A layer of dye, followed by a layer of displays. The dye isn’t the best, but if my displays do fail…”

“How did you even get an invite?” she hisses back.

“You are naive indeed, Sara, if you doubt my ability to create false identities.”

“So then why did you have that conversation with me, last time we met, talking about your subversive ideas, while using your real name?”

“How do you know it was my real name?” Aria asks.

Fuck.

They push Sara farther away from them, leading her in another spin. It’s strange how it works—like her body naturally goes along with what they do. Maybe this is what good leads are capable of. She makes a mental note to spend more time learning from Aloysius—after she figures out what Aria’s game here is.

Aria pulls her back in, whispering again. “I did give you my real name, though. I am quite upstanding in my Pink Rose guise… unlike you, reporter.”

“Shut up.”

“Ah, but do you really want me to?” Aria guides her slightly lower, toward the floor, letting her weight rest in her arm—then pulls her back up. Is that what people call a dip? Did they just dip her?

“Fuck you,” she mutters.

“I wonder if you want that, too,” they say. Their voice is smooth, complex, more than enough to draw her in. But that’s not what she should be thinking about. And neither is the quality of their dancing.

So, yeah, she should keep them talking.

“Okay, fine, tell me this—if you’re not stalking me, then why do we keep running into each other?” she asks.

Aria hums, a gentle sound that somehow perfectly fits the way they pull her in tighter to whisper into her ear. She’s seriously starting to wonder if they and Mikael should have
